Workforce

In April 2021, we set out the basic approaches to a new workforce strategy:

• to focus on support for experienced staff rather than unrealistic targets for new recruits; and 
• to build new integrated care teams.

We set specific recommendations on training and focus of the nursing workforce in November 2022, including a much stronger skill base for social care.

In March 2023, we reviewed proposals for further large increases in numbers of hospital consultants, and concluded that the better approach is to focus on retention, productivity and job satisfaction.
