We first advocated surgical hubs at our launch in 2021: "The aim must be to increase the productivity of the hospital system by 20 per cent ... Collaboration across the UK could deliver investment in a network of new centres for diagnosis and elective treatment." Hubs have gone on to become a key part of the strategy for elective recovery.
In October 2021 we argued that scale matters: "New hub proposals should deliver several times the output of a typical elective site."
In March 2022 we advocated a "hub club" - in which hubs would "collect data on costs, productivity, diagnostics and referral thresholds as well as on treatment and rehab". The aim is to "would improve outcomes for high risk patients and make Britain an international leader in the quality and evidence base for elective surgery".
