Capital expenditure will be a key factor in the development of new integrated services by Integrated Care Systems.

We have consistently advocated the combining of all capital funding streams into one grant, to cover maintenance and new projects including joint projects with GPs and social care. These grants would also cover funds required for the 40 hospitals programme.

In March 2021, shortly after our launch, we argued for smaller local and modular projects: "The age of the mega hospital is coming to a close mainly because patients can be better served by a more modular system closer to home but also due to more immediate difficulties of site acquisition, planning and funding."
